Community groups and information

There are a number of groups active in the Tasmanian community providing much-needed services, particularly to regional communities. There are also a number of resources provided by local, state and the Australian government to assist small business, communities and individuals.

CWA and the Drought

On 1 December 2006 the Federal Government gave the CWA $2 million to help families affected by the drought. This money was distributed to the states and all gone within three weeks. In January 2007 Woolworths held a National Drought Action Day and gave the profits ($4.7 million) to CWA to be distributed to needy families in drought areas. In March 2007 the Federal Government gave the CWA a further $2 million which again was all distributed in three weeks.

Country Women's Association of Tasmania

Established throughout Tasmania, the CWA comprises groups of women who desire to assist in the promotion of quality of life in rural and urban areas, social issues, care for the environment, cultural activities and home management.

Eat Well Tasmania is a State-wide program that provides support and assistance for activities or projects that promote enjoyable healthy eating.

Planning for succession is a very important part of managing the farm business.

Listing includes business, telephone, postcode, internet and email directories.

Managing remnant bush and riparian areas in the Tamar region

On-ground assistance to landholders in the George Town, Launceston and West Tamar municipalities (and adjacent areas) to conserve and manage native vegetation and increase agricultural production through assistance with fencing, off-stream stock facilities, weed control and management advice.

Mentor Resources of Tasmania

Mentor Resources of Tasmania (MRT) provides FREE mentor guidance and assistance to new and existing small businesses and community groups.

NRM in Tasmania

There are three NRM regional groups in Tasmania working with farmers to address natural resource management needs and concerns. Includes information on funding opportunities.

Protective Agricultural Safety and Support inc (PASS)

PASS Inc is a “Not for Profit”, grass roots organization, passionate about safety in the rural workplace that aims to eliminate fatalities, and injuries in rural workplaces.

Sustainable farm families

The innovation of Sustainable Farm Families (SFF) has been to contextualise farming family health in the familiar triple bottom line farm-reporting format. Farm family health, is now being recognised by families and their organisations as an important resource for investment of substantial individual time and funding.

Tas-Regions magazine includes news and features about Tasmanian farmers, rural and regional projects and innovations in agriculture.
