Gene technology

The application of gene technology has raised concerns worldwide, particularly in relation to crops and food. In Tasmania concerns have been raised about the impact gene technology may have on the environment, the health and safety of Tasmanians and our international reputation as a producer of quality products in a clean and green environment. There is a moratorium on commercial release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Tasmania until June 2008, in order to preserve marketing opportunities for the State.
