Beef production

Meat cattle are produced in all agricultural regions of Tasmania. Beef dominates the Tasmanian red meat industry, with the lamb industry being about a third of the value of the beef industry. In 2003/2004 Tasmanian beef producers carried 496,000 beef cattle representing about 2.0% of the Australian beef herd.

The State's Meat Hygiene Act 1985 and the Commonwealth's Export Control Act 1982 are overseen by the Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW). In addition, DPIW administers the Animal Health Act 1995 and The Animal (Brands and Movement) Act 1984 which underpin all animal traceback programs, including the NLIS.
