Sheep industry

DPIW is calling for submissions to its Review of Prescribed Sheep regulations.

Sheep are the most numerous domestic grazing animal in Tasmania and return a significant proportion of the State's agricultural income through sheep meat and wool. The main breed for wool production is the Merino sheep.

Sheep meat is produced by the prime lamb industry, often using first cross merino mothers to produce second cross progeny for sale. The State's Meat Hygiene Act 1985 and the Commonwealth's Export Control Act 1982 are overseen by DPIW. In addition, DPIW administers the Animal Health Act 1995
