Water quality and assessment information

There is a range of freshwater information available including stream and river flows data, water quality readings and pesticide monitoring in water catchments.

The Water Information System for Tasmania (WIST) is a key point of access to Tasmanian freshwater related information.

Algal toxicity testing

Marine and freshwater algal identification and enumeration, with an emphasis on blue-green algae and potentially harmful species, is offered by Analytical Services Tasmania (AST).

Community water quality testing protocols

A resource for local community groups to develop water quality monitoring protocols that follow International, National and State standards.

Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment

Focuses on issues relating to water quality management and health risk reduction, from catchment and reservoir management and water treatment to the distribution of drinking water to consumers' taps.

Government water quality assessment and monitoring programs

Monitoring programs are providing information to respond to concerns about about the level of chemical usage and of the impacts of chemical pollution on industry, human health and the environment.

Pesticide monitoring in water catchments

A program to monitor Tasmanian water catchments for a range of herbicides and other pesticides has been in place since January 2005.

Tasmanian river catchment water quality initiative

Tasmanian river catchment water quality initiative has developed a unique version of the CSIRO's Pesticide Impact Rating Index (PIRI) for use in Tasmania. This link contains all the information needed on PIRIs and how to obtain free on-site training.

Includes information on water flow, water quality and natural freshwater values.

Water management regions and regional water management officers

Tasmania is divided into eight water management regions, with major offices in Hobart, Prospect, Devonport and Smithton. Each region is supported by a Regional Water Management Officer (RWMO) who can provide advice on farm dams and general water-related issues.

Waterways annual monitoring reports (DPIW)

For each catchment, the annual reports include: a land-use map and summary information about the catchment, streamflow and water allocation information, water quality data for monitoring stations located in the catchment, and a report on ‘riverine health’ for monitoring sites located in the catchment.
