Wheat growers have until the end of June to apply for a new round of grants to help them capitalise on new export opportunities. The second round of funding is part of a $9.37 million package to help growers and exporters take advantage of the Government's recent economic reforms of the bulk wheat export marketing system.
General trade figures released last week reflected a strong result for the industry, showing the value of wheat exports rose by 65% in the March quarter, worth nearly $1.7 billion. According to Wheat Exports Australia, more than 5.9 million tonnes of bulk wheat was exported by 15 accredited companies to 39 countries, in the five months to the end of April 2009. Eleven of those countries received bulk Australian wheat for the first time in at least four years, including the UK, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Malawi and Tanzania.
These grants will help new exporters develop their markets and target new sales, particularly in lucrative niche markets. We are looking for innovative export ideas which establish long-term trade relationships with international customers.
Applications for the 2009-10 funding round close on 30 June 2009.
