Young growers’ tour- New Zealand, July 2009

AUSVEG Media Release - 4 June 2009

Opportunity of a lifetime for 10 young Australian vegetable growers

Ten young vegetable growers will be given the opportunity to view leading agriculture practices in New Zealand this July as part of a National Levy-funded tour.  The tour is intended to expose young growers to issues surrounding production, marketing, processing, the supply chain and new research.

The tour, supported by Horticulture Australia Limited, is aimed at enthusiastic and innovative young growers and will enable 10 participants to visit vegetable operations near Christchurch, Timaru, and Ashburton in New Zealand from 17 to 25 July.  Participants' tour costs will be significantly subsidised by the National Vegetable Levy.  Growers will be asked to contribute $735 toward the cost of the tour.  All air and land travel, share-accomodation and meals will be included.

Any growers between the ages of 18 and 38 who are employed within a vegetable growing business are encouraged to apply.  The tour will not only give them new skills, but will be a great opportunity for them to meet and learn from other young Australian vegetable growers.  Tour participants will have the opportunity to attend the Horticulture New Zealand conference in Christchurch.  Horticulture New Zealand's three-day annual conference is a significant element of the tour, and will feature a variety of commodity and issue-specific information sessions.

Applications for the 2009 Young Vegetable Growers' Tour to New Zealand are now being accepted
