The State Government has been working with the TFGA and DairyTas, as well as farmers and councils, to develop a practical approach to the issue of cattle crossing public roads.
Funding of $750,000 has been allocated over two years for the Stock Underpass Pilot Program, which will allow farmers to access funds as a contribution to the overall cost of installing an underpass. The program will provide grants up to one third of the cost of construction of an underpass, up to a maximum grant of $50,000.
The Government has already developed a set of standard drawings for a modular stock underpass system to eliminate most of the design costs. These modular components can now be bought directly from pre-cast concrete fabricators in Tasmania.
Applications for the pilot program must be submitted and assessed before construction commences.
