Tasmanian Government Media Release - 19 June 2008
Continuing to build partnerships with all levels of science, industry and wildlife groups is a significant part of the way forward in efforts to ensure the long-term survival of the Tasmanian devil.
A State Government commitment of more than $12 million, combined with federal funding of $10 million, provides a major platform for the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program to continue its vital work on core projects. The Government will also continue to build on partnerships to help the conservation effort.
The Save the Tasmanian Devil Program has made significant progress over the last five years to unlock some of the mysteries of this unusual disease.
Although we already have some of the leading experts in their fields working on the program, it is known that there is a range of expertise, experience and resources in other areas that could further enhance efforts. The government understands that there are no easy solutions to the serious threat posed by the facial tumour disease, which is why they have provided a level of funding to enable the program to investigate and implement actions across a range of areas.
The fundinng initiative by the State Government, combined with federal Government funding and the work done by concerned groups and individuals everywhere, enables the continuation and expansion of core projects. These projects include increasing the existing insurance population, disease suppression and population studies, diagnostic and research work, and raising community awareness.
