Report on RFA released

The Federal and Tasmanian governments released an independent report into the implementation of the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement on the 14 March 2008. Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke and Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Resources Steven Kons welcomed the report. They said it identified many areas of progress in implementing the Regional Forest Agreement and had constructive suggestions on how to move forward.

The comprehensive review identifies 43 specific recommendations for further improving management practices and monitoring emerging issues. It includes recommendations on how the agreement can adapt to continuously improve best management practices and access to forest management planning information.

Both Governments agree with the recommendations contained in the report and will provide a formal response after they have considered implementation. This was the second five-yearly review of the 20-year Regional Forest Agreement. The review was conducted by John Ramsay, a former head of the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services. The review was thorough and included a seven-week consultation period.

The Tasmanian RFA was signed in November 1997 between the Federal and Tasmanian governments, to strike a balance between conserving Tasmania's forest estate and its use for economic production and recreation.
