New comprehensive weather site

The Bureau of Meteorology's new web site, Water and the Land, presents an integrated suite of information for people involved in primary production, natural resource management, industry, trade and commerce. Water and The Land is a ‘one-stop' weather and climate information site.

In addition to traditional weather forecasts, warnings and observations, the website presents the user with a graphical version of a localised rainfall forecast that utilises the latest in computer modelling.

Unlike other web sites that present rainfall forecasts based on one run of a single computer model, the new Water and the Land rainfall forecast combines the output of up to ten models into a single "ensemble" prediction, and has been found to be more accurate than any single model.

Graphical forecasts provide likely amounts and the probability of a range of falls out to four days. Total rain out to seven days is also available.

Of course, traditional forecasts produced by Bureau meteorologists are available on Water and the Land website, and should also be considered in your decision making.

Even more information

The Bureau's very popular rainfall radar and satellite imagery, and weather pattern maps, are available from the website. These services are complemented by a suite of climate information, which include:

  • Seasonal climate outlooks
  • Long term or seasonal trends and averages
  • Evaporation, evapotranspiration and humidity
  • Sunshine and solar radiation
  • El Nino, La Nina and drought statements.

A work In progress

As part of the Bureau's strategy to continuously review and improve access to weather forecast and warning services via the Internet, Water and the Land is an ongoing site. Plans are well underway to introduce:

  • Seven day local weather forecasts - 54 towns and locations throughout Tasmania
  • Animated seven day wind forecast
  • Graphical Frost and Sheep Chill Watches.
