Productivity commission report:

Droughts can have devastating social and financial impacts on farmers and their local communities as well as adverse environmental effects.  Droughts can also reduce Australia's economic growth through forgone production and reduced employment.  Droughts affect individual farming families and farm businesses differently.  The impacts depend on local climatic circumstances, farm management practices and the degree of income diversification.
