LivestockThe meat and livestock industry in Tasmania, and its flow-on effect into the manufacturing and retailing sectors, contributes significantly to the State's economy. The industry is comprised mainly of beef, wool, primelamb production and dairy.
From 1 July 2004 Tasmania began to implement the National Livestock Identification System for cattle and in 2006 NLIS for Sheep & Goats was introduced. Beef producers and dairy farmers can apply for a grant, equivalent to 50% of the purchase price of NLIS scanning equipment. DPIW has distributed NLIS scanners across selected Service Tasmania stores. Anyone interested in using these scanners should go to their nearest store and find out how to hire one.
