Preferred option for Sassafras/Wesley Vale irrigation scheme
Tasmanian Government Media Release - 28 June 2009
The Minister for Primary Industries and Water David Llewellyn today released the preferred option for the Sassafras/Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme for public comment and feedback at an information session in Port Sorrell.
The new scheme will deliver 35ML/day to the valuable farming regions of Sassafras, Moriarty, Wesley Vale, Northdown, Harford, Thirlstane and Pardoe. The $8.7 million project will transport water from the Mersey River through the Paper Australia Pipeline and network branch lines of approximately 65 kilometers.
The development of the pipelines follows the examination of economic, hydrological, cultural and environmental issues associated with the delivery of water to the region. Following community input and TIDB Board and Government approval, construction is expected to commence in October 2009, with anticipated completion in April 2010. Once complete the scheme will provide additional high security water, adding to the vast array of annual and perennial cropping activities and dairy and livestock enterprises within the district.
Feedback on the preferred option will be received until 28 July 2009.
